Out of the Mountains
Day 30: Tazewell, VA to Radford, VA (69 miles, 3900 feet of climbing)
Mom and dad ended up going into town yesterday and getting drinks at a biker brewery called Back of the Dragon, which was the only business that was open in the small town. The brewery is located at the end of a 32 mile stretch of road with over 400 curves that is a destination for motorcyclists. It even had a large statue of a dragon outside. Maude and I hung out at the hotel, and we later joined them and got dinner at KFC.
We started at 9 am again today. It’s nice being out of the extreme heat and starting at a reasonable hour. It was almost cold when we started out this morning. It wasn’t forecasted to rain but it looked like it might. Luckily it held off for the duration of the ride and by the time Mom started the sun had come out. We biked along an empty road next to a stream for most of the first half. There were hills obscured by the clouds on either side but we were mostly going downhill in the valley. We passed a bunch of cow and goat farms.
Overall, it was an easy and enjoyable 35 miles. We met Mom and Maude in a church parking lot and Mom began her leg for the day. Mom and Dad rode through mostly farm land on windy and empty country roads. I think it’s safe to say that we are over all of the mountains for the ride. It was sunny for their ride, but luckily not hot and with a nice tail wind they finished their 35 miles quickly.
We’re back to civilization today staying in between Radford and Christianburg, two cities with a population of over 10,000 people. We have so many options for dinner who knows what we’ll pick.
