Excessive Heat Warning
Day 3- Brawley, CA to Palo Verde, CA (67 Miles and 2100 feet of climbing)
Mom rode first today to do the harder of the two halves of the ride. They left at 4 AM and biked through beautiful sand dunes before the road opened up to flat lands with mountains in the distance. They stopped a bit earlier than anticipated due to some hip pain and stood waiting for me in the shade of a small sign. The only shade for miles.
When I took over for the mostly downhill leg it was already over 80 degrees. We went up and down small hills on a well paved road. We could see the mountains in the distance, a not so welcome reminder of what is to come. The first hour was great! We were averaging over 15 mph, the fastest I’ve ever ridden. We saw a dead snake, a group of donkeys, a lake and even passed by the Colorado river. By hour two it was well over 90 degrees and we called it quits at just before two hours when the temperature reached 100 degrees. A woman even stopped us in the parking lot seeing our bikes to make sure we knew how hot it was going to be today.
