Hi. We’re the Pammers.

My dad and I have been talking about biking across the country for over 20 years now. This summer we decided to finally do it. Follow our progress here.

Road Trip Day 6 - Mesa, AZ to San Diego, CA

We woke up early again today and headed to Planet Fitness to lift before the drive. We passed several signs indicating it was open 24/7 but, unfortunately, it was closed for the holiday. As Woody Allen said, “90% of success is just showing up”, so we were happy to get in a 90% workout as we headed back to the hotel. All workouts should feel so good!

Today, we travelled 375 miles to reach the final destination of our westward journey. On previous days, we thought we were in the desert, but we found the real desert in California. There were huge sand dunes with no vegetation in sight. It only lasted for 10 or 15 miles, but there was sand as far as the eye could see. For much of the drive, we hugged the Mexico border, and we saw the border wall in many areas. The mountains just outside of San Diego were impressive. As we drove, we realized how challenging the return trip will be on bicycles.

San Diego is beautiful. We went for a long walk to see the Pacific ocean. The temperature was in the mid 70s. It was refreshing, although we did see a few people with down jackets.

On our way back we realized there would be fireworks next to our hotel. We spent much of the evening sipping wine and working out the first week of the bike route, before going to the harbor to see the fireworks. A beautiful end to a wonderful first week of our journey. We hope you all had a great holiday. Thanks for reading.
